The Smooth station in Glasgow will continue to carry local programming in key slots for seven hours a day.
In all of the other areas affected – East Midlands, Cardiff, North Wales, Greater Manchester and the north-west, the north-east, central Scotland, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire – the commission ruled that Global had to sell either a Real or Smooth station, or one of its own services, such as Heart or Capital.
The UK's largest radio operator has been told by the Competition Commission that it must sell some of GMG Radio's Real and Smooth stations, or its own services such as Heart and Capital, in seven areas: the East Midlands, Cardiff, North Wales, Greater Manchester and the north-west, the north-east, central Scotland, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire.
"The CC has found that in many areas where Global and Real and Smooth stations currently overlap and compete, advertisers buying airtime on a campaign-by-campaign basis, directly or through smaller agencies (non-contracted advertising) could face higher costs for both advertising and sponsorship and promotion activity," the regulator said in a statement.
Figures for the third quarter of 2010, released in October 2010 showed that collectively, the six regional Smooth stations had a weekly audience of 3 million at the time Smooth became a national broadcaster.
