The major effect of tobacco smoke on cell cycle observed in all studies is consistent with a p53-induced DNA damage response and chromosome damage at elevated concentrations.
A similar improvement was incorporated into the Mechanisms of Cellular Senescence network model: the original network pathway indicated that the chemical acrolein (a common component of cigarette smoke) increased cell senescence.
