The models show that the reactivation of pre-existing discontinuities and their orientation control: (i) the evolution of the main fault orientation distribution through time, (ii) the geometry of relay fault zones, (iii) the geometry of small scale faulting, and (iv) the geometry and location of fault-controlled basins and depocenters.
The deep rooting favoured a large-scale fault propagation type of folding, whereas shallow-seated rooting favoured a small-scale fault propagation type of folding and block rotations.

However, in practice, catastrophic faults rarely occur, while small-scale faults are more likely to occur.
Fault-containing self-stabilizing protocols promise not only self-stabilization but also containment of the effect of small-scale faults, i.e., they promise quick recovery and small effect for small-scale faults.
We find that small-scale faulting and fracturing at Yucca Mountain is variable and is strongly controlled by larger scale fault system architecture.
These steep (65° 85°), small-scale faults are characterized by throws of 5 25 ms TWT and show a tendency to merge laterally and vertically with adjacent faults.
The seismic reflection pattern within this entire assemblage suggests significant reactivation of small-scale faults prior to the Early Miocene that may have caused substantial deformation within the strata (Fig. 7).
Furthermore, our results have additional implications for the hydration of the plate and upper mantle (Ranero et al. 2003; Garth and Rietbrock 2014) from both large- and small-scale faulting, prism development (Underwood 2007; Ike et al. 2008), and coseismic near-trench anomalous vertical displacement (e.g., Kodaira et al. 2012).
Landward of first significant gullies, a distinct network of margin parallel, small scale arcuate faults is observed.
With the joint defensive protection system constituted by a plurality of all-in-one devices, the flexible scheduling and normal device of the secondary system can be ensured while the reliability of which cannot be influenced by small scale indeterminate faults.
