Weight loss with canagliflozin 100 and 300 mg occurred rapidly through week 6; a progressive decrease was seen with canagliflozin 300 mg, whereas canagliflozin 100 mg showed smaller reductions over the remaining treatment period.
"Although we don't yet have evidence for any sustained decrease in blood pressure, the small reduction we saw over the short term might complement other treatment options and might contribute to reducing the risk of cardiovascular disease," study researcher Karin Ried, of the National Institute of Integrative Medicine in Australia, said in a statement.
While the risk reduction was modest in this randomized placebo-controlled trial of several thousand people, even a small reduction in the rapidly growing over-55 population should not be overlooked.
The last stand usually takes only a small reduction to improve control over the final thickness, profile, and flatness of the strip.
