In the poultry culling area, 1 large slaughterhouse (2 locations) and 1 smaller slaughterhouse, which together accounted for 15% of the national slaughter capacity for broiler chickens, had to be closed during the culling (March June).
Figure 5 shows that most animals move only a few times during their lifetimes; a single move (from birth location to slaughterhouse) is most common.
Complete data were collected for location of slaughterhouse and the collection date, but only partial data were available for pig age, breed, and production system at last point of sale (Table 1 and Table 2).
Sheep meat is sold in regional or national markets according to the location of slaughterhouses.
However movements to slaughter can be important for disease spread; and in case of regionalisation during an outbreak the location of slaughterhouses and related transports are important and thus it would be interesting to investigate these movements.
