Banks's friend Ian Rankin, creator of the archetypal Scottish detective Inspector Rebus, said he preferred the literary novels to what Banks called his "skiffy" [sci-fi] books.
In fact, most of what the general public thinks of as sci-fi is viewed with some disdain by science fiction fans, who dismiss the genre as "skiffy" and most of the films, books and games it includes as "fantasy" (see below).
