Controlled experiments in a semi-natural environments [e.g. 11], [12], [27], using individuals with known pedigree, genotypes and levels of inbreeding might provide the best solution to yield quantitatively reliable estimates of the effect size of interactions between inbreeding in the environment.
Following the same discussion, it is therefore unknown whether the expected effect size of interactions will be substantially larger than previously found in the single marker analyzes or whether the effect size will only be marginally larger.
Although most significant interactions found by our method on experimental data were limited to two or three genes, there are no theoretical limitations to the size of interactions that can be searched, at no particularly higher computational cost, setting this method apart from other recent work on penalized selection of interactions in high-dimensional data (Bien et al., 2012).

The best MDR model is determined from the training set for each size of interaction and an estimate of the model's prediction accuracy is calculated from the testing set.
