The role of follicle size on the developmental potential of gametes or their fertilization ability has been recognized [ 1, 2, 42, 43].
During size measurements, the developmental stage of embryos in the brood chamber of mature adults, date, and time were recorded to refine estimates of the timing of maturity (Am) and adult instar durations, (A1, A2, A3) [ 45, 58].
While identifying the mechanisms that control spindle size revealed a cellular role in spindle orientation, in the future, it will be interesting to examine how changing spindle size affects the developmental program of the embryo.
In support of this conclusion, studies using human and rodent neurosphere cultures have demonstrated that treatment with ethanol increases neurosphere size, skews the developmental potential of neural progenitor cells, and fundamentally alters the neuronal differentiation program (Roitbak et al. 2011; Vangipuram and Lyman 2012).
In plants, MADS-box genes are of particular interest because of the large size of the family and the critical developmental roles the members are known to play (Theissen et al. 2000).
A composite brightfield and mRFP fluorescence image showed that all of the animals had a detectable red-head that was proportional in area to the developmental stage and size of the animal (Figure 4A).
