There are often ulterior motives to criminal behavior, and some are situational offenders.
Applied to the problem of child sex offending, the situational perspective would suggest that many offenders are flexible in their sexual preferences and take opportunities to sexually abuse children as and when the situational conditions are favourable (Wortley and Smallbone 2006a).
The current study is situated in a situational crime prevention framework but from the angle of offender-based research in criminology.
Here, approaches like the D principles focusing more sharply on more detailed offender-related but situational intervention mechanisms, may offer more flexible and more tailored structuring of knowledge, thinking and communication among practitioners, and between practitioners and researchers.
These studies, among others examining the situational aspects of adult sex offenders' modus operandi (e.g., Kaufman et al. 1998; Lang and Frenzel 1988; Leclerc et al. 2005, 2008), have tended to focus on the active role of the perpetrator in the offence process—how adults utilize and manipulate routines, relationships and situations to groom and sexually exploit children.
Offenders can be further divided based on their approach [10],[11]: Situational or Short Term Strategic Placement: the offender has weak motives (intensity) and might not have acted upon it before.
To our knowledge, evidence-based knowledge on offender modus operandi and situational crime prevention strategies from active offenders is currently inexistent in the literature.
As such, SCP theory concentrates on controlling the immediate situational environment and preparing for an offender's overt attempt to seize control of the target.
