"Link Exchange created a network of disparate sites," says Copeland.
"What a great treasure trove of undeveloped sites," says Alf Naman, who builds residential projects downtown.
eToys concentrated on press ads and outdoor sites, says UK marketing manager James Bidwell.
"We're desperate for affordable housing in Cambridge and we're losing good sites," says Gawthrop.
"We have found evidence of this at other sites," says Richards.
"Every one of these Web sites says 'Cash for information,' " he said.
"I've worked with one of Britain's foremost experts on Roman glass and volunteer on many sites," says Willis.
"There's clearly a synergy between these two sites," says Bill Tancer, general manager of global research at Hitwise.
For example, HomeAway.com, one of the most popular sites, says it has more than 300,000 rentals worldwide.
"Rights-holders have a lot of interest in YouTube but also in directing traffic beyond YouTube and on to their own sites and other publisher sites," says Muirhead.
To stimulate all the right sites, says Waddell, "you'd have to make sure that your implantation was extremely specific – and I can't see that happening".
