The story begins with a passage of extraordinarily beautiful prose, and never lets up the pressure as it traces old passions and contemporary pains: "Silent sound, vivid absence, pressure from beyond the quilts and walls, the taste of pennies on the tongue; several miles apart two sisters awoke within moments of each other and instinctively knew it had snowed".
In many ethnic dances the music brings the feet down to the ground on the beat of a drum, but the Tibetans emphasized the space between drumbeats with their feet thrusting upward, as if their bodies were airborne hieroglyphs embodying the silent sound of one hand clapping.
During his time in business, he married, fathered a daughter, learned the business-friendly skill of golf ("golf does not swing"), and began a lifelong interest in drugs – first as something to do, then as a topic for study (his first book, about addiction, was The Silent Sound of Needles, 1969), and eventually as something to try hard not to do.
