Once inside, they sit on a plush sofa facing a 140-inch screen on which a short film demonstrates the projector's ability to render subtle differences in shades of red and to show hue and grain in black objects.
These data are plotted as a function of hue difference in Supplementary Material Fig. S 4, which shows that, as for pair preference and pair harmony, similarity decreased as hue differences increased for all combinations of cuts.
Indeed, the pair examined by Kidd et al. [ 40] differ in melanin pattern rather than hue, and Jordan et al. [ 47] found that assortative mating was maintained even under monochromatic light masking the species' hue differences, implying that some visual features other than hue were used by females.
As mentioned above, this choice is guided by Ware's observation [ 12] that maximum color sequence discrimination is achieved when hue differences coincide with light-to-dark differences.

These data are plotted as a function of hue difference in Supplementary Material Fig. S2, which shows that pair harmony decreased as hue difference increased for all cut-combinations, as they did for pair preferences in Experiment 1. What, then, are the color appearance factors that influence ratings of color harmony?
Figure 10b shows the same similarity data re-plotted as a function of the hue difference between the figure and ground colors.
This plot emphasizes that pair preferences are highest when the figure and ground have the same hue (but differ in saturation and/or lightness levels) and decrease monotonically as hue difference between the figure and ground increases.
Figure 2b shows the same data as in Fig. 2a, but re-plotted as a function of the hue difference between the figure and ground colors (in terms of the number of hue steps in the BCP color sample).
