Whether or not requests for life shortening end of life decisions such as euthanasia can be the result of the provision of high quality end of life care is an important unanswered empirical question.
Of the 1690 non-sudden deaths, data for possibly life shortening end of life decisions were missing for 46 (of which 43 were hospital deaths), and data for continuous deep sedation were missing for 61 deaths (of which 56 were hospital deaths).
Our findings in Belgium suggest that life shortening end of life decisions, including euthanasia or physician assisted suicide, do not seem to be prevented by the involvement of multidisciplinary palliative care services, which has been a major argument against legalisation of euthanasia.
