We made a movie about a dispute over a new motto for a South Shore village—"Art Colony by the Sea" versus "Slime Eel Capital of the World".
However impossible it is to think of "Jon & Kate Plus Eight" or "Jersey Shore" as art, reality shows have taken over wide swaths of television, and memoir writing has become a rite of passage for actors, politicians and celebrities of every ilk.
Her own appetite for the wilder shores of art is now also clear.

Ms. Hoptman's premise is that while drawing explored the wilder shores of art for much of the 20th century, especially after 1970, it has now returned to more familiar territory.
Beginning on Saturday, more than 40 antique maps and sea charts demonstrating the progressive shaping of the continents and seas go on display through Oct. 1 in "Earth's Elusive Shores: The Art of Mapping After 1500" at the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science in Greenwich, Conn.
In a nearby gallery "Earth's Elusive Shores: The Art of Mapping After 1500" provides a fascinating look at how mapmaking evolved after Gutenberg's invention of movable type, the voyages of Columbus and other Europeans and the translation of Ptolemy's second-century "Geographia" from Greek into Latin.
In "Earth's Illusive Shores: The Art of Mapping After 1500" -- an exhibition on view through Oct. 1 at the Bruce Museum of Arts and Science in Greenwich -- more than 40 antique maps and sea charts, most hand-colored woodcuts or engravings dating from after 1520, demonstrate the sometimes eccentric shaping of continents and seas by cartographers and publishers.
Could the surmounting political urgencies, the tremors of earth that growing wasteland, the vestiges of materials, bones, and boats in shores and art alike—, the calls for responsibility and ecology all be heard beckoning for this shift of time focus?
