Labelled buds in previous-year shoots of plants growing under the canopy produced the lowest number of new shoots, values for gap and forest edge plants being twice as high (χ=11.25, P = 0.004; Fig. 3).
The determination of the shoot biomass values (cf. Table S6) via mixed model has been described elsewhere [17].
These differences suggested that root N was derived more from uptake of glutamine than from NO3−, while the opposite was true for shoot N. Values of 15N abundances were therefore used to calculate fractions of plant, root and shoot N that were derived from each individual N source (Fig. 2).
Limiting iron supply led to about equal shoot length values for both genotypes.
The ratio between the root and shoot δN values may also depend on the partitioning of N metabolism between the roots and shoots.

Statistically significant differences were found between total shoot elongation values (a) of gap (13.67 ± 0.88 cm), forest edge (29.02 ± 4.18 cm) and under canopy (18.59 ± 2.12 cm) plants, with the following values: ER edge vs. gap) = 645; ER edge vs. under canopy) = 2.12 and ER gap vs. under canopy) = 22.74.
Both in the leaves and shoots the values varied significantly from each other (p = 0.02).
