It has recently been given a high profile in the United States, following reports that U.S. President Donald Trump suggested America should admit more immigrants from Norway, rather than from "shithole" countries.
WASHINGTON ― Most news networks reporting on President Donald Trump's remarks about restricting immigrants from "shithole countries" notably didn't shy away from using the vulgar word, and called the president's insult what it was ― racist.
The president has a long history of racist comments and actions ― such as lamenting immigrants coming from "shithole countries" like Haiti and nations in Africa rather than from Norway.
When some Democrats and Republicans believed they reached a bipartisan agreement last week, Trump sunk those negotiations in a tense meeting in which he asked "Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?" That in turn prompted accusations of racism from Democrats who dug their heels in on demanding that DACA be part of any budget deal.
When the discussion moved on to African countries, he reportedly said, "Why are we having all these people from shithole countries come here?" And he added that the United States should admit more people from places like Norway.
