Respiratory dysfunction was evidenced by significant reductions in the PaO2/FiO2 ratio (480 ± 50 pre vs 159 ± 55 post, P < 0.05), the dynamic lung compliance (27 ± 6 ml/cmH2O pre vs 19 ± 5 ml/cmH2O post, P < 0.05), the increase in dead space ventilation (20 ± 4 pre vs 47 ± 20 post, P < 0.05) and, the shift of pressure × volume curves to the right, with reduction in pulmonary hysteresis.
A total of 64 shifts of pressure load 827.4 kPa (120 psi) were applied to simulate one pass of the HVS loading with a speed of 12 km/h (7.5 mph).
The additional dead volume leads to a phase shift of the pressure which is also the main reason of lowering output results.
The habitat structural maintenance and aggregation inside the park, and fragmentation outside the park boundaries, signal a potential shift of human pressure from inside to directly outside of the park.
Simultaneously, a relative forward shift of the pressure under the foot was found.

The salt-sensitive Dahl S (SS) rat is a widely studied example of an animal that develops hypertension, associated with a shift of the pressure-natriuresis relationship (relationship between sodium excretion and arterial pressure) to higher pressures, when fed a high-salt diet.
"Shift after shift, the waves of pressure, we didn't have them at all it seemed," Kings center Jarret Stoll said.
A recent animal study demonstrated that inspiratory resistive breathing (IRB), similar to upper airway obstructed breathing causes significantly increased lung elasticity measured by low-frequency forced oscillation technique (FOT) and downward shift of the pressure-volume curve; as IRB generates large swings in intrathoracic pressures and triggers lung inflammation [ 13].
Recently, study animals were exposed to several hours of IRB, mimicking upper airway obstructed breathing, the researchers found that lung elasticity significantly increased in the IRB animals compared to the spontaneously breathing animals and found a downward shift of the pressure-volume-curve, suggesting that IRB leads to large negative swings in intrathoracic pressure [ 13].
Beyond essential hypertension, efferent sympathetic traffic is logically linked with the three major physiologic features identified as the renal component of the "cardiorenal syndrome" [ 23, 24]: excess renin release, rightward shift of the pressure-natriuresis relation and reduced renal blood flow and glomerular filtration rates.
