In addition to the two productions mentioned above and the three detailed below, the other new stagings this season are Puccini's "Tosca," directed by Luc Bondy, which opens the season; Janacek's "From the House of the Dead," also new to the Met, directed by Patrice Chéreau; and Offenbach's "Contes d'Hoffmann," directed by Bartlett Sher, which has already made news with major cast changes.

The frontiers of the society for which Sher and Çîçek 23 are fighting have expanded considerably since they defended Kobanî.
The director Bartlett Sher's staging, which employs inventive projections and animation from 59 Productions, is suitably fluid, ominous and shadowy.
So is Mr. Sher's interpretation, which seems to take place in both a well-scrubbed, modest sitting room and a fairy-tale forest.
A slimmed-down version of the musical put on five years ago in the States, which Sher described as "the most expensive out-of-town try-out in theatre history", it is elegant and edgy rather than barmy and bumptious.
It took me a while to understand what Sher was doing, which, it turns out, was what he was also doing three years ago, when he staged "The King and I": trying to make these historical musicals matter to a twenty-first-century audience, whose concerns are different from those of the original audiences.
Bartlett Sher directed the production, which is new.
The food is not made with kosher meat, which Ms. Sher said would be prohibitively expensive.
