And indeed, as Sher points out, even if there is some relationship between a victim and the stranger who victimizes her, it's not clear that this relationship plays any role at all in grounding her blame.
At one point Mr. Sher, who likes to incite his actors and have them fight back, had to tell Mr. Szot to stop being so agreeable.
And yet as Bartlett Sher, the play's director, pointed out recently, if the audience doesn't believe in Joe and his talents then the show can't work.
