We analyzed seven fossil specimens from the restricted, upper Culebra Formation and the La Boca Formation in the Gaillard Cut, along the Panama Canal, in order to determine the ratio of 87Sr/86Sr of the calcium carbonate composing the shell (Table 2).
The materials with high hemicellulosic contents are barks, leaves, grasses, corn cobs, husks and shells (Table 1).
The sulfide component is clearly identified as pyrite based on interatomic distances derived from fits of Fe S and Fe Fe shells (Table 6).
To further minimize the impact of sample heterogeneity and the analytical error of metal/Ca ratios, we report replicate measurements of metal/Ca ratios on re-picked G. ruber shells (Table 2).
Accordingly, nine significant overwash events may be inferred between c. 3.0 ka BP and the overlying age 2.0 1.8 ka BP based on radiocarbon dates of cerith shells (Table 1, Fig. 5).
Based on qualitative information from XANES spectra, the oxide component in the EXAFS spectra was fit with four shells (Table 6), Fe–O at 2.00 Å, Fe Fe at 3.08 3.10 Å, Fe Si at 3.26 Å, and Fe Fe at 3.39 3.42 Å, to account for all primary Fe X distances in phyllosilicates and Fe(III) oxides (if present).
Non-haired populations exclusively corresponded to species described in the literature as having smooth shells (Table 1).
