In usugai-hō, a technique using thin shell, shell pieces are cut into designs by means of a knife or needle and are glued on after the surface has been given two coatings of lacquer.
Sand on ocean beaches usually includes a high proportion of shell pieces and, increasingly, bits of decomposing plastic trash; Hawaii's famous black sand is weathered fragments of volcanic glass; the sand in the dunes at White Sands National Monument, in New Mexico, is mainly gypsum.
The wheeled shell, as shown in Fig. 3c, is constructed from two annulus frames, eight shell pieces, and eight wheel-rim-hinges.

The second discovery was of Rancholabrean (between 300,000 to 11,000 years ago) shell pieces in the Giant Cement Quarry in South Carolina (near Harleyville), by Bentely and Knight in 1998.
