Based on multiple criteria, including cell size, shape, and proliferation potential, the populations of elutriation-enriched cells were shown to remain within the normal range found for the starting population of non-elutriated, asynchronously growing cells.
They compared densitometric features of digitized images with variables of nuclear size, nuclear shape, and proliferation and succeeded in one characteristic feature: the standard deviation of the kurtosis of the gray value histogram which showed a significantly higher value in anaplastic astrocytoma, whereas the other densitometric variables did not give a characteristic hint.
Although differences in shape and proliferation were already apparent at this stage, gene expression changes were moderate (Fig. 4A,B), with less than 300 genes detected as altered by >1.25-fold and few of these altered by >twofold (supplementary material Tables S3, S4).

The cell shape index and proliferation rate of SMCs on 30- and 20-microm strips were significantly lower than those on non-patterned collagen (control), and the spreading area was decreased only for cells patterned on the 20-microm strips, suggesting that SMC proliferation is dependent on cell shape index.
Their immediate and characteristic response (i.e., "oxidative burst") to foreign stimuli involves cytoplasmic engulfment (i.e., phagocytosis), an increase in metabolic activity, and a change in cell shape, size and proliferation (Block et al. 2007).
The extracellular matrix component Tenascin C is involved in the regulation of cell adhesion and has been shown to instruct cell shape, migration and proliferation during early regeneration stages after amputation (Yu et al., 2011; Jaźwińska et al., 2007; Chablais and Jazwinska, 2010), during muscle regeneration (Calve et al., 2010) and after cryoinjury of zebrafish heart (Chablais et al., 2011).
A FE model of rigid muscle paralysis was used to determine how the local mechanical information produced by muscle contractions would be altered by paralysis and in turn how this compares with the alterations in joint shape and cell proliferation observed.
CaCCs may also be involved in control of volume, cell shape and cell proliferation, as well as intracellular pH regulation (Nilius et al., 1997; Hartzell et al., 2005).
Chick hindlimbs harvested at seven days of incubation were cultured for six days, under either static conditions or one of three different dynamic movement regimes, then assessed for joint shape, cell survival and proliferation.
