Pain intensity (VRS) difference comparing anodal stimulation effect (post-stimulation minus baseline) with the sham effect (post-stimulation minus baseline) was 29% (p = 0.008; Figure 2).
In patients with pseudoresistant hypertension there was no effect on ABPM post denervation arguing strongly against a sham effect.
The results are expected to give answers to the following questions: first, whether acupuncture is superior to sham acupuncture; second, whether the acupuncture effect lasts longer than the sham effect.
To evaluate the TRT reliability of individual active-tDCS and sham effects on RS fcMRI, voxel-wise intra-class correlation coefficients (ICC) of post-tDCS maps between testing sessions were calculated.

During physical therapy patients do not only benefit from the treatment itself, e.g., the pharmacological effect of a drug or the physical effect of a laser therapy, but also from non-treatment specific agents, the so called sham-effects, placebo-effects or contextual effects [ 36].
Whereas exercise training increased VO2max by 8% (p < 0.05) in sham, the effect was 22% (p < 0.01) in KN-93 mice after the exercise training period (magnitude of response difference p < 0.01, Fig. 1a).
After exclusion of an outlying set of trials showing very large differences between acupuncture and sham, the effect size for acupuncture was similar across the pain conditions, [SMD -0.23 (95% CI -0.33, -0.13)], [SMD -0.16 (-0.25, -0.07)], and [SMD -0.15 (-0.24, -0.07)] (all p<0.001) respectively.

Protein synthesis rates were significantly lower in Px than in Shams (main effect of group P<0.05) and only increased with leucine gavage in the Shams (Figure 4C, P<0.05).
