Since the time of European settlement, vast herds of cattle, as well as horses, have virtually taken over the areas of the landscape not planted in crops, and many native animal populations have dwindled.
Respondents reported that, following the arrival of the Ovambanderu pastoralists, the Kwe's mobility started to decrease and temporary encampments were gradually replaced with semi-permanent settlements on cattle posts.
Generally, the observed increase in the extent of forest cover changes during 1985 to 2005 was linked to settlement of the Fulani cattle herders in the reserve.
The elders evaluate the information by asking questions related to water availability, pasture conditions, existing stock numbers, the number of settlements and the reproductive performance of cattle already present in the area.
The largest settlements with the largest herds of cattle and small ruminants were in group C. Some had other non-farming activities, including crops, but the majority did not practise crop-based agriculture.

"On the island, there's evidence of Bronze Age fields, herds of cattle, and so on, but no settlement," he said.
