The word "serf" is a perfectly acceptable word in written English.
It can be used to refer to a person in a feudal system who was bound to work the land in exchange for protection and other rights granted by a lord. For example, you could say, "During the Middle Ages, many people were serfs bound to the land they worked for their lords."
