Interestingly, sequence chimerism in the 3' untranslated portion of the mRNA gave rise to multiple poly-A addition signals with similar strength, indicating a more relaxed sequence restriction of the 3' processing machinery than previously believed.
These results indicate that the terminal nucleotide of the 3' overhang influences the pattern of products but does not alter exonuclease activity, further stressing the strict telomere sequence-specificity of the processing reaction.
