Eye-tracking has commonly been used to examine the gaze behaviour of observers in this task, but limited research has examined the sequence of eye movements observers engage in when searching for abnormalities.
When attending to a visual array, such as a natural visual scene or a sparse screen-based display, we spontaneously manifest a sequence of eye movements in order to ensure that light from objects of interest is projected onto the most sensitive part of the retina, the fovea (Holmqvist et al., 2011; Land & Tatler, 2009).
