This process utilizes an organic dye as an antenna to sensitize small sized UCNPs due to the fact that the absorption of the dye is orders of magnitude stronger than the absorption by the lanthanide ion, and a large amount of lanthanide ions are located at or around the nanoparticle surface due to its unique high "surface-to-volume" ratio produced by the nanoscale dimension.
