The lack of appreciation of the importance of sensible sun exposure for providing children and adults with their vitamin D requirement has led to a worldwide vitamin D deficiency pandemic., In the United States the Center for Disease Control and Prevention CDCC) reported that 32% of children and adults have a circulating concentration of 25(OH D < 20 ng/mL.
Sensible sun exposure can also be an excellent source of vitamin D for both children and adults., Sensible means never to be exposed to an amount of sunlight that would cause a sunburn since this is the major cause for both melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer.
In addition the revelation that exposure to sunlight or UV radiation could cure and prevent rickets, led to the widespread recommendation by health regulators and government agencies to encourage sensible sun exposure, i.e., amount of sun that would be beneficial for producing vitamin D and reducing risk for rickets while preventing sunburning (Fig. 8).

Humans have and continue to obtain a significant amount of their vitamin D requirement from sun exposure.,,,, Although excessive exposure to sunlight increases risk for nonmelanoma skin cancer which is easy to detect and easy to treat there is no evidence that sensible sun exposure, as our hunter gatherer forefathers likely experienced, increases risk.
Evidence suggests that living with a smoker is a sensible proxy for SHS exposure, particularly for younger children who spend a greater proportion of their time at home, given the evidence that living with a smoker increases exposure to tobacco smoke.
Finally, careful design of the study by defining sensible exposure time, time line for events, and appropriate adjustments for various aspects while determining the time-to-events are the primary strengths of the study.
