As it says in the program, the qualities the judges are looking for in the senior pageants are "dignity, maturity," and, of course, the always elusively defined "inner beauty".
We used the following key words: dignity, older, geriatric, gerontology, aging/ageing, senior citizen, OAP/OAPs, pensioner, old or elderly or elder or elders.
"They don't have medical services, and a society that doesn't care for its senior citizens has no dignity".
But most business leaders and conservatives considered the very idea that government had a moral responsibility to help senior citizens retire with dignity to be outrageously radical, a dangerous trampling of individual liberty.
Call it the Dignity for Seniors tax, because that's what it would provide.

An America that created Social Security and Medicare so that seniors could live with dignity.
Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) said, "I would change attitudes so that America's seniors are afforded the dignity, safety and security they have earned through lifetimes of contribution".
"Michigan families will lose under Land's out of touch agenda to privatize Medicare and Social Security, making it tougher for seniors to retire with dignity and undermining our chances of a full economic recovery".
But a healthy economy is also one that provides good, safe jobs that expands the purchasing power of consumers, makes it possible for families to live in decent housing, offers access to health care, gives young people the opportunity to attend college, and allows seniors to retire with dignity and security.
