The bill passed by the Senate, with 89 senators in favour and eight against, is a messy, short-term deal that raises taxes on the wealthiest but postpones for two months any consideration of spending cuts.
The disclosure bill complements a bipartisan bill entered in the Senate on 11 June, sponsored by eight senators, to compel release of the surveillance court's secret rulings.

The bills will go to the lower house first thing to be passed so that the i's are dotted and the t's are crossed, ready for when the new senators take up their benches next week.
