It is well known, however, that healthy canopies exert a strong control on the physical and biological environment, for example by sweeping away detrimental sediments or inhibiting potential competitors such as algal turfs [21], [47], [48], thus triggering positive feedbacks that facilitate self recruitment and maintenance [23].

Recent empirical efforts to track larval dispersal have demonstrated localized self-recruitment [6] [10], but have not documented larvae seeding distant or commercially fished sites.
These findings suggest that larval retention and self-recruitment induced by mesoscale oceanography, larval behavior, and oceanographic barriers promote elevated genetic structure [9], [10], [12], [54].
