The workshop participants (N = 15) included quality managers (1), doctors (2), registered/specialist nurses (9), center coordinators (2), and self-help representatives (1).
Prior to the selection of the experts, our research team met with key informants in the village [health/development workers such as the Accredited Social Health Activist ASHAAanganwadi Workerrker (AWW) or Auxiliary Nurse Midwife (ANM), representatives of Self Help Groups, etc.] to get an overview of the village, its size, social segmentation, and a general impression of its socio-economic status.
DISCERN was developed through an iterative process involving clinical specialists, self-help group representatives, GPs, a consumer health information expert, a healthcare consumer, a lay medical publisher, a medical journalist, and representatives from the Plain English Campaign, the Community Health Council, and the NHS Centre for reviews and Dissemination [ 19].
Fourteen EBM courses were conducted including 161 participants without previous EBM training (n = 54 self-help group representatives, n = 64 professional counsellors, n = 36 patient advocates, n = 7 others); 71% had a higher education degree; all but five finished the course.
