Thirty young adults (M = 20.7 years) and 31 older adults (M = 69.6 years) performed an adapted Hayling task including a switching block (i.e., unblocked design) in addition to the classical task (i.e., blocked design), and the selection of the response between two propositions.
The variant test was designed in order to control for a possible verbal contamination in the selection of the response due to the visually presented note labels.
The fact that the two tests yielded the same results indicates that the phonetic effect of the note label does not depend upon the external (visual) information available during the selection of the response but rather that it is related to an internal, likely auditory, representation of the verbal label of the musical note.
Here, response programming not just requires the localization and the selection of the response hand, but also the localization of the target with respect to the body and the hand, and the selection of movement direction and amplitude.
