The area was part of the French seigniory of La Douville from 1664 to 1763.
Discovered by the French navigator Jacques Cartier in 1535 and named after Maurice Poulin, who was granted a seigniory north of its mouth in 1668, the river first served as a fur-trading route.
As well as the seigniory of Brion, he held the titles of comte de Charny and comte de Buzançois.
