Records show that mean winter temperatures over northern continents have increased considerably in the last 30 40 years [ 1] while paleoclimate evidence (e.g. sediments, tree rings and glaciers) suggest that the Arctic has now warmed to the highest temperatures in the last 400 years [ 2].
Accurate timescales with high resolution were essential for correlation of the various geochemical measurements made on cores from marine and lake sediments, ice, trees, caves, and corals.
