Sections of nematodes were present in the lumen of the bladder adjacent to the surface.
In one sample from near the knee, there were numerous cross sections of living nematodes identified as Onchocerca sp. due to their size (70 130 μm in diameter) and because they had a cuticula with longitudinal ridges.
The mass contained multifocal granulomatous nodules with central necrosis surrounding sections of partially mineralized nematodes with 2 striae per ridge, characteristic of O. lupi.
Routine histologic analysis of all nodules showed an intense inflammatory granuloma around several cross-sections of filarial nematodes.
