All CT scans were performed on a 64-section CT scanner: Light Speed VCT (GE Healthcare Japan, Tokyo, Japan) with helical scanning and retrospective ECG-gated reconstruction.
The CTp studies were performed with a 64-section MDCT scanner (VCT, GE Healthcare, Milwaukee, WI, USA).
Newer MDCT technology (such as the application of 128- to 256-section MDCT scanners or dual-source technology) was reckoned to improve diagnostic performance with a spatial resolution of 5 mm or less in diameter [ 12].
The CT acquisitions were performed using a 40-section spiral CT scanner (Philips 40; Philips Healthcare®) with the following parameters: 0.5 mm collimation, 0.55 mm section thickness, 140 kV, 300 mAs, a 90 mm field of view and a 1024 × 1024 matrix.
The main sections are the scanner, including the front end and beamformers; back end; user interface; and transducer.
A 16-section multidetector CT scanner (Mx8000 IDT or Brilliance 16P, Philips Medical Systems, Cleveland, OH) was used.
The technical parameters for the MDCT protocol depend on the speed of the scanner, the section thickness and the number of phases in the majority of institutions the study comprises a multiple phase procedure including at least two of the following phases: unenhanced, arterial, nephrographic and delayed.
From 22 children initially tested 4 were excluded due to excessive motion in the scanner (see section fMRI acquisition below).
H&E staining indicated that MK-2206 treatment induced an increase in necrosis that was observed by scanning the entire tissue section using an image scanner and visually inspecting the necrotic areas (Additional file 1: Figure S7).
Last, we used two CT scanners, whose section thicknesses were 1 mm and 2 mm; this difference might have affected the mean CT values and led to inaccuracies in measurements.
