By Monday morning, the fire was extinguished and a temporary section of pipe was being laid.
By 1 15 P.M., work crews finished installing a new section of pipe.
Each 500-meter section of pipe will be tethered to the sea floor far below.
State and utility officials said the explosion occurred 2.8 miles south of that section of pipe.
Under the theory, the person said, the section of pipe was removed to make room for the hoist.
The tube is basically a five-foot-long section of pipe outfitted with rubber seals designed to keep out seawater, attached in turn to a milelong section of pipe leading from the drill ship to the seafloor.
Those lawyers have said the removal of the section of pipe had nothing to do with the deaths.
Prosecutors are also examining why some inspections required by the Buildings and Fire Departments were not conducted or failed to uncover the missing section of pipe.
"It would take someone really special to try and cut off a section of pipe hanging almost 20 feet above ground," says Gituru.
Its wooden planks are lashed together with a coil of metal as if each section of pipe were a long, narrow barrel.
No rooftop is so high, no ledge so distant, no section of pipe so out of the way that you cannot reach it.
