According to the survey on "Integration of the second-generation (ISG)" carried out by ISTAT in 2015 and involving lower and upper secondary schools, immigrants born in Italy perform almost the same scores as Italian students, meaning that there is no significant statistical difference between the two categories.
But they must accept two supporting documents and a form of secondary identification from immigrant parents, such as a Mexican voter registration card or Salvadoran national identification.
Participating students include those who have recently completed their G.E.D.s, recent immigrants with secondary educations from aboard and adults returning to formal schooling.
Fifty-nine percent of immigrants have secondary schooling and only 17percentt has tertiary education or a university degree.
The relatively worse performance of immigrants in secondary education is consistent with their consequent lower attendance rates in post-secondary education (Fig. 5).
Yet, just after full assimilation, the employment probabilities of immigrants unrealistically diverge away from those of natives (see, e.g., Nordic, Western, Eastern European, and Latin American immigrants with secondary education).
Furthermore, the differences grow over time (see Table 5).13 2006 figures for those with any post-secondary qualifications show that immigrant men are more likely to have engineering degrees or to specialize in math/physical sciences or business.
The present study shows that considering siblings and the dynamics between siblings is a productive, heuristic avenue of investigation for explaining the relative outperformance of children of immigrants in secondary school.
In another study from the Netherlands mono-ethnic immigrants in secondary schools from the Antilles and Surinam were also included in addition to Turks and Moroccans, all reporting a lower prevalence of drinking than the Dutch students [ 7].
Such relocations, sometimes known as secondary migration, are common among immigrants to the United States as they chase jobs, reunite with relatives and climb the social ladder.
