5 p.m. 1) SMOKE ON THE WATER Muslim women in headscarves, scruffy locals in rock T-shirts, Filipina baby sitters: come dusk, Beirut's seaside walkway known as the Corniche becomes host to a city on parade.
Far-sighted decisions by the city fathers have endowed downtown Vancouver with a wooded 400-hectare (1,000 acre) waterfront park and a long seaside walkway, and spared it a freeway slicing through the city centre.
5 p.m. 1) ON THE CORNICHE Come early evening, all of Abu Dhabi -- expat professionals from Europe, South Asian laborers, local families in white dishdashas (for the men) and black abayas (for the women) -- strolls along the Corniche, a picturesque seaside walkway.

New families flocked to buy into the cooperative of 2,800 single-family homes, a kind of seaside suburb in the city, with sandy walkways and hardly any crime.
AT a pretty seaside town called Nervi on the outskirts of Genoa, a pedestrian walkway follows the coast for about one and a quarter miles southeast to the village of Sant'Ilario.
And while the Renaissance-inspired architecture no doubt impresses with marble floors, towering columns, arched walkways, rotundas and outdoor porticos it's the picturesque seaside locale where ocean-meets-emerald fairway that will have you swooning.
