It begins with the things those brochure beaches cannot offer, like a crash course in salsa music at Orchard Beach in the Bronx, or the Fellini by the seashore experience at Coney Island, where you can walk out of the ocean and jump dripping wet on the historic wooden Cyclone roller coaster or see a minor league baseball game.
Do not expect a "brochure" beach but rather an urban seashore experience, one that is stimulating and in a way exotic but generally not the true solitary experience you get at farther-flung public beaches like Robert Moses State Park on Long Island or Sandy Hook in New Jersey.
