Add leisurely sips of Matua sauvignon blanc 2003 from New Zealand ($24), a heaping plateful of crisp-fried calamari with a spicy red sauce and a toasty Ipswich whole belly clam roll (with crunchy batter and tender clams) and you'll have a seashore experience without getting sand in your shoes.
It begins with the things those brochure beaches cannot offer, like a crash course in salsa music at Orchard Beach in the Bronx, or the Fellini by the seashore experience at Coney Island, where you can walk out of the ocean and jump dripping wet on the historic wooden Cyclone roller coaster or see a minor league baseball game.
Do not expect a "brochure" beach but rather an urban seashore experience, one that is stimulating and in a way exotic but generally not the true solitary experience you get at farther-flung public beaches like Robert Moses State Park on Long Island or Sandy Hook in New Jersey.

On some of their adventures — smoking cigarettes, making out with boys, hitchhiking to the seashore — Ginger seems to be following her friend, hungry for Rosa's company as much as for the thrill of illicit experience.
