Recreational fishing can continue around the three deep-sea canyons and four seamounts that are now protected, but seabed mining and any other extractive activities are banned.
But according to Craig Smith, a professor of biological oceanography at the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, seabed mining will also stir up vast plumes of sediments, some of which could resettle over areas much larger than the mine sites themselves.
It governs uses of the world's oceans, establishing ground rules for everything from navigation to deep seabed mining.
Anglo American, one of the biggest, has an 11% holding in Nautilus (and 45% in De Beers), chiefly, it says, to keep abreast of the possibilities of seabed mining.
