THE SEA HOUSE, by Esther Freud.
"The Sea House," dedicated to her father, the painter Lucian Freud, draws on letters her grandfather (Sigmund's son) wrote to his wife.
This is Red Sea House, a scheme in Cardiff Bay for retired Somali seamen, but it could be any retirement home in the country.

The Freud connection endures to this day thanks to Esther Freud's 2003 novel The Sea House, which recalls the holidays her great-grandfather Sigmund and his family enjoyed on the island before they and many Hiddensee residents were banned by the Nazis.
As Abdi Sugulle, the manager of Red Sea House, puts it: "There is a sense of belonging where the docks is concerned". Nevertheless, this is not a rich community, and Butetown, though it was tastefully redeveloped in 1988, is not a rich area.
