On other scrolls, elements of ink-and-brush landscapes -- trees, figures, pavilions -- are cut loose from their original contexts.
The exhibition includes several of Mr. Zhang's vast oil paintings, which fuse traditional Chinese scroll painting imagery with visual elements of famous Western modernist masterpieces.
Lead Designer Ken Rolston, asked prior to Morrowinds release what he thought were the "core, untouchable design elements" of the Elder Scrolls series which "set them apart from other games", responded immediately: "Free-form experience".
They felt that they had created a game that would appeal to a number of genres with the inclusion of elements of platform, action and side-scrolling gameplay.
The game uses elements of both racing and side-scrolling platform genres, in which the protagonist can move to the right and, by reversing, to the left as well as hopping over and ducking under various obstacles.
It has elements of a collectible card game (the Scrolls themselves), but roots this on a battlefield where strategic positioning is everything – to win a game, either player must destroy three of the five idols their opponent guards.
This last portion abandons the platforming elements of the previous levels, and resembles a scrolling shooter.
