Modern "enriched" cages hold 40-60 hens, with at least 750 sq cm (shared) floor space per hen – that is 150 sq cm larger than a sheet of A4 – and must include perches, small screened areas for egg laying and a scratching area.
Using a linear regression analysis for the screened areas for the incidence rounds 1996-2003, there were 36% more breast cancers than expected in 2003 in the screened areas (Fig. 1).
