In Australia, women aged 50 69 are routinely invited for free biennial mammograms through the national screening programme, while women aged 40 49 or over 70 are eligible for screening on request but not actively invited.
The year 1985 was chosen as the start date for ascertainment because that was the year in which the MMSSP (formerly the Manitoba Maternal AFP Screening program) became a formal provincial program, providing screening on request to all residents at no charge.
Study subjects were participants in a comprehensive health examination conducted at the Hitachi Health Care Center, Ibaraki, Japan, during which colorectal cancer screening and, on request, abdominal CT scanning were performed.
However, as less than half the GP practices recruited to this trial provided an electronic signature to the screening hub on request, this suggests there is a lack of GP engagement with the programme.

The screening unit receptionist informed each woman who had received her final routine mammogram that she was no longer eligible for routine screening, advised her that she might continue to be screened every 3 years on request, and provided a card with contact details and a suggested date for contact.
