Intestinal sections were scored for inflammatory infiltration of neutrophils and macrophages and inflammatory lesions as followed: 0: No lesion; 1: Mild mucosal inflammatory infiltrate without ulceration; 2: Marked mucosal inflammation with punctuate mucosal erosions, 3: Prominent inflammation with ulceration extending through the muscularis mucosae.
4 Overall scores for inflammatory and muscle fibre domains, as well as several items from each of these domains and severity assessment by histopathologists, reached high reliability for both quadriceps and biceps samples (table 2).
Several activity scores for inflammatory and structural MRI findings have been developed; however, no international consensus exists about the definition of diagnostic MRI findings, which was a factor in our review.
The sum of scores for inflammatory cell infiltration (score, 0 4), goblet cell depletion or decreased mucus accumulation (score, 0 4), mucosa thickening (score, 0 4), destruction of architecture (score, 0 or 3 4) and loss of crypts (score, 0 or 3 4) was calculated (maximum 20).
Scoring for inflammatory cell infiltrates (at the chronic stage of infection, the infiltrates mainly contain mononuclear cells): 0, no significant infiltration; 1, infiltration at a single focus; 2, infiltration at two to four foci; 3, infiltration at more than four foci; and 4, confluent infiltration.
No significant differences were established between the score values for inflammatory infiltrate intensity, collagen depositions, calcifications and necrosis, and acute, respectively chronic pulpitides.
Liver biopsies were scored as 0 using the severity assessment scoring system for inflammatory lesions.
At 46 and 53 dpi, this monkey showed mild portal infiltration, and at necropsy, the liver histopathology was scored as 1 using the severity assessment scoring system for inflammatory lesions (Table 2).
Moreover, the histological score for the inflammatory lesions of the submandibular glands of MRL/ lpr mice was significantly improved following LIPUS (p < 0.05) (Fig. 4c).
A vertebral unit was defined as the region between two virtual lines drawn through the middle of each vertebra according to one of the recently published MR scoring systems for inflammatory involvement of the spine in AS [ 19].
