The scientists said: "This programme, when fully implemented, rapidly met its benchmarks despite the many constraints, expectations and unrealistic timelines imposed on it.
Joan Webber, principal pathologist at the Forestry Commission, told the programme: "Scientists working together in Japan and Germany have been looking at a fungus associated with native ash trees in Japan.
For the first year of the programme, scientists who had already returned--but not more than a year before--were also eligible.
"The Europa flyby is not a life-finding mission," said programme scientist Curt Niebur.
"This was not a difficult choice for the science team," said Michael Meyer, Nasa programme scientist for Curiosity.
