In the first part of the assessment, which covered the physical- science basis of climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) stated that a variety of observations had revealed that the warming of the climate system was "unequivocal" and that there was "very high confidence that the globally averaged net effect of human activities since 1750 has been one of warming".
Thus, there is a need to re-establish the science basis of climate policy.
This publication represents the first time that IPCC working groups I (which focuses on the physical science basis of climate change) and II (which focuses on impacts, adaptation, and vulnerability) have collaborated on a report, says SREX coordinating lead author Sonia I. Seneviratne, an assistant professor at the Institute for Atmospheric and Climate Science, ETH Zürich.
